Madeira's Reward-for-Effort Viewpoint
The Vereda dos Balcões (PR11) is one of Madeira's most accessible levada walks — just 1.5 km from the Ribeiro Frio trailhead, following a water channel through dense Laurissilva forest. The payoff at the end is a wide, open view over the Ribeira da Metade valley and, on clear days, the Central Mountain Massif: Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres, and Pico Ruivo, along with the distinctive Penha d'Águia rock.
Along the Way
The path passes native laurel, Madeira laurel, and Madeira Indica trees, alongside exotic species like oak and maple. Keep an eye out for the endemic Madeira finch.
