Madeira Hiking Trails: What You Need to Know
Madeira is one of the best hiking islands in Europe. Within an hour's drive you can walk along a levada through the UNESCO-listed laurel forest, cross volcanic peaks above the clouds or follow cliff paths high above the Atlantic. On this page you will find the most popular official PR trails and our favourite free treks, each with distance, duration, difficulty and booking info.
PR trails vs. free treks
PR trails ("Percursos Recomendados") are the official, signposted hiking routes maintained by the regional nature conservation institute. They are marked with yellow and red signs, regularly checked and must be booked in advance. Free treks are all other hikes, such as old footpaths like the Vereda do Larano. They do not need a booking and are free, but they are not officially maintained, so check the conditions before you go.
How to book a PR trail
Since January 2026, all official PR trails must be booked online in advance on the regional SIMplifica portal. You choose the trail, date and time slot and pay the fee:
- €4.50 per person for most PR trails
- €10.50 per person for the full PR1 Vereda do Areeiro
- Free for children up to 12 and Madeira residents (registration still required)
Popular trails like PR1 and PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes sell out quickly, especially in the morning, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. Fees, opening days and closures can change, so always check the current status before you go.
Best time to hike on Madeira
You can hike on Madeira all year round. Spring to autumn usually brings the most stable weather, while winter is milder on the coast but can be cold, wet and windy in the mountains. The north side of the island is greener and rainier than the south. Whatever the season, start early: mornings tend to be clearer and the trails less crowded.
What to bring
- Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip – levada paths are often wet
- A rain jacket and a warm layer for the mountains
- A headlamp for trails with tunnels, such as PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde
- Water, snacks and sun protection
