The PR11 Vereda dos Balcões is one of the easiest hikes on Madeira and offers one of the best views for very little effort. The trail starts in Ribeiro Frio and follows the Levada da Serra do Faial through the laurel forest to the Balcões viewpoint.

The route
The path runs almost level along a levada, past native and endemic trees of the laurel family. At the end, the Balcões ("balconies") miradouro looks out over deep green valleys, the Fajã da Nogueira hydroelectric plant and, on clear days, the central peaks: Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo. Look out for the friendly chaffinches that often greet visitors at the viewpoint.
Back in Ribeiro Frio you can visit the forest park with its trout farm.
Booking and fees
PR11 must be booked in advance on SIMplifica. The fee is €4.50 per person; children up to 12 and Madeira residents are exempt.

Tips
- Go early in the morning – the views are clearest and the viewpoint less crowded.
- Perfect as a short first hike or for families with children.
