Interactive Madeira hiking map
I've put all the hiking trails I recommend on Madeira into one overview map: official PR trails and free treks, with trailheads, levadas and viewpoints. Zoom in, tap a pin for the details and download the map to your phone, so you can use it offline on your hikes.
How to use the hiking map offline
Mobile reception can be weak in the valleys and on the north coast, so download my map before you set off. My map runs on Rexby, a travel guide app. Once it's saved on your phone, the map, search and navigation to the trailheads all work without mobile data. Here's how:
- Open the map via the button above and get my guide on Rexby.
- Install the Rexby app and sign in with the same account.
- Open my guide in the app (you'll find it under "My Purchases").
- Tap the download icon at the top right (the downward arrow) and confirm.
- Wait until the download is finished – done, the map now works offline.
Tip: download the map the evening before at your accommodation, not at the trailhead car park where there is often no signal. On the trail, always follow the official signs as well – the PR routes are marked in yellow and red.
Madeira hiking trails map by region
Madeira is small, but driving between trailheads takes longer than you think because of the mountain roads, so it helps to plan your hikes by region. These are the trails I recommend – you'll find all of them on my map:
Central mountains
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro – from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo
North coast
- PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde – levada walk to a 100 m waterfall
West
- PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes – the classic levada walk in Rabaçal
East
- PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço – coastal hike to the island's eastern tip
- Vereda do Larano – cliff path between Machico and Porto da Cruz
You can find distance, duration, difficulty and booking info for every hike in our overview of all Madeira hiking trails.
Madeira Hiking Map: FAQ
Is there an official hiking map of Madeira?
Yes, the regional tourism board publishes an overview of the official PR trails. My map collects all the trails I recommend – official PR trails and free treks – in one overview, with trailheads, viewpoints and my personal tips, so you can plan whole days around your hikes.
Can I download the Madeira hiking map for offline use?
Yes. Open my guide in the Rexby app, tap the download icon at the top right and wait until the download is finished. After that, the map, search and trailhead navigation work offline – ideally download it the evening before, while you are still on WiFi.
Do I need to book the trails on the map?
Official PR trails must be booked in advance on the SIMplifica portal. Free treks like the Vereda do Larano do not need a booking.
