The Vereda do Larano is an old footpath that once connected Machico and Porto da Cruz. Today it is one of the most dramatic coastal hikes on Madeira: the path is carved into cliffs high above the ocean, with views of the Ponta de São Lourenço and the Penha d'Águia rock.
The Vereda do Larano is not one of the official PR trails. That means no SIMplifica booking and no fee – but also less official maintenance, so check conditions before you go.
Vereda do Larano at a glance
- Start/End: Machico (via Boca do Risco) / Porto da Cruz – possible in both directions
- Distance: approx. 11 km one way
- Duration: approx. 3.5–4 hours
- Difficulty: moderate – exposed sections without railings
- Booking: not required, free
The route
From the Machico side, the path climbs to the Boca do Risco pass, a miradouro with a sudden view of the wild north coast. From there the trail follows the cliffs westwards, partly as a narrow ledge high above the sea, before it descends through forest and farmland to Porto da Cruz.
Shorter option
If you do not want to arrange transport, start in Porto da Cruz and walk to Boca do Risco and back. You still get the best cliff sections.
Getting back
As a one-way hike you need to get back to your car: take a taxi or a bus between Porto da Cruz and Machico.
Safety tips
- Not for people with vertigo: there are long sections with steep drops and no railings.
- Avoid the trail in strong wind or after rain – the clay soil becomes very slippery.
- Bring water and sun protection; there is little shade on the cliffs.
