The PR8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço takes you to the easternmost ponta of Madeira. Unlike the green interior, the peninsula is dry, treeless and windswept, with red and ochre volcanic cliffs and views of the north and south coast at the same time.
PR8 at a glance
- Start: Baía d'Abra car park
- End: Casa do Sardinha (return the same way)
- Distance: 4 km one way, 8 km there and back
- Duration: approx. 2.5 hours
- Difficulty: moderate – undulating with some steep steps

The route
The path runs along the narrow peninsula, a protected nature reserve, up and down over volcanic ridges. Several miradouros open up views over steep cliffs and the two islets at the tip. Halfway you reach Casa do Sardinha, a small visitor centre with a palm-lined garden and a jetty – a good spot for a break or, on calm days, a swim at Cais do Sardinha. Fit hikers can add the steep climb to the Pico do Furado viewpoint.
The trail sometimes has small temporary diversions; follow the signs on site.
Booking and fees
PR8 must be booked in advance on SIMplifica. The fee is €4.50 per person; children up to 12 and Madeira residents are exempt.
Fees and rules can change – check SIMplifica before you go.
Tips
- There is no shade at all: bring sun protection, a hat and plenty of water.
