The PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes is one of the most popular hikes on Madeira – and for good reason. The trail follows a levada through the green laurel forest of Rabaçal and ends at a small lagoon fed by countless springs and waterfalls: the 25 Fontes (25 springs).

The route
From the road at Rabaçal you first walk down to the Rabaçal forest house, the meeting point for several trails in the area. From there the PR6 follows the levada along the slopes of the Ribeira da Janela valley, with wide views over the forest. The path is mostly flat but narrow in places, with some steps and muddy sections. At the end, the water of the Paul da Serra plateau emerges from the rock and falls into the 25 Fontes lagoon.
The PR6.1 Levada do Risco starts at the same point and is a short, easy detour to a tall waterfall – a great add-on if you have time.
Booking and fees
Like all official PR trails, PR6 must be booked in advance on SIMplifica. The fee is €4.50 per person; children up to 12 and Madeira residents are exempt. On busy days, parts of the trail can be managed as one-way sections – always follow the signage on site.
Fees and rules can change – check SIMplifica before you go.
Tips
- Arrive early: parking along the ER 105 fills up quickly and the trail gets crowded from late morning.
- Wear shoes with good grip – the path is often wet and slippery.
- Bring a warm layer: Rabaçal lies at over 1,000 m and is often misty.
