The PR1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo is the easiest way to stand on the highest point of the Madeira archipelago: Pico Ruivo, at 1,862 metres. The trail starts at Achada do Teixeira, where you can see the basalt rock formation known as "Homem em Pé" (Standing Man), and follows a paved mountain path up to the summit.

PR1.2 at a glance

  • Start: Achada do Teixeira (car park)
  • End: Pico Ruivo (return the same way)
  • Distance: 2.8 km one way, 5.6 km there and back
  • Duration: approx. 1.5 hours there and back
  • Difficulty: moderate
  • Booking: mandatory via the SIMplifica portal

The route

The path climbs steadily along the ridge, passing several small shelters built for the sudden weather changes in the mountains. Shortly before the summit you reach the Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo, a mountain hut where three more trails meet: the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, the PR1.1 Vereda da Ilha and the PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada. From the top you have an unobstructed view over the central mountain massif – often above a sea of clouds.

Booking and fees

PR1.2 must be booked in advance on SIMplifica. The fee is €4.50 per person; children up to 12 and Madeira residents are exempt. If you hike the PR1 from Pico do Areeiro, you also finish via PR1.2 down to Achada do Teixeira.

Fees and rules can change – check SIMplifica before you go.

Tips

  • Come for sunrise or sunset – the views over the clouds are spectacular.
  • It is cold and windy at the top, even in summer: bring a warm jacket.
  • Clouds can roll in quickly, so start early for the clearest views.

FAQ

Is PR1.2 the easiest way to Pico Ruivo?

Yes. With 2.8 km each way on a paved path, it is the shortest and easiest route to Madeira's highest peak.

Can I combine PR1.2 with PR1?

Yes. Many hikers walk the PR1 from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo and then descend via PR1.2 to Achada do Teixeira. Plan transport between the two car parks.
