Start in the Old Town

Funchal's Zona Velha (old town) is the natural starting point — a historic core of narrow streets where local character is easiest to find. Don't miss Rua de Santa Maria, an open-air gallery of over 200 painted doors as part of the city's “Arte de Portas Abertas” project, and stop for a meal at a traditional tavern like Taberna Ruel, set inside a centuries-old building with a wine cellar built into a cistern.

Mercado dos Lavradores

Funchal's farmers' market has been running since 1940, and it's still one of the best places to see the island's produce up close — exotic fruit, flowers, and a fish market especially lively on Fridays and Saturdays.

Funchal Cathedral (Sé)

This 16th-century cathedral is easy to walk past, but its cedar ceiling — inlaid with ivory — is considered one of the most beautiful in Portugal, and worth the five minutes it takes to step inside.

Monte: Cable Car, Gardens, and the Famous Toboggan

A 15–20 minute cable car ride climbs roughly 580 metres above the city to Monte, where the Monte Palace Tropical Garden and the Church of Our Lady of Monte both draw crowds for good reason. For the ride back down, Funchal's famous wicker toboggans — a 19th-century tradition — coast about 2 km down the hillside in around 10 minutes, steered by two carreiros in traditional white.

Madeira Botanical Garden

Above the city on the other side, the Botanical Garden covers a wide range of international flora across French and Japanese-style sections, with panoramic views back over Funchal and the bay.

Wine, Coffee, and Sunset

Round out a day (or evening) with a tasting at one of Funchal's historic wine lodges to learn about Madeira wine, a stop at Motya for specialty coffee, and a sunset drink at Barreirinha Bar Café in the old town — regularly rated the best sunset spot in the city.

Good to Know

Funchal is compact enough to explore mostly on foot, though the Monte cable car and toboggan are worth budgeting a half-day for on their own. Most attractions are easiest to combine into one or two full days before heading out to the rest of the island.
